As the Managing Director of Collection Bock-Schroeder and the son of a witness to history, Jans Bock-Schroeder treats photographs as documents of cultural evolution, bridging the gap between the archival past and the sophisticated modern collector.

Jans Bock-Schroeder is a publisher, fine art photography expert, curator and the managing director of Collection Bock-Schroeder. He is the son of Peter Bock-Schroeder (1913–2001), the German photojournalist and first West German photographer to gain access to the Soviet Union after World War II (1956). Since his father's death on 19 February 2001, Jans has been the custodian of an archive of extraordinary historical depth.

His background is photography in the fullest sense: born into a family where both parents were photographers, he grew up understanding the medium not as a profession but as a language. That biography, the son of a witness to history, guardian of an uncensored visual record of the 20th century, is the foundation upon which Visual Independence was built.

The Paris Photo Fair: The Conceptual Moment (2011)

One year before Visual Independence was launched, a defining event shaped its philosophy. At the Paris Photo Fair 2011 at the Grand Palais, the world's premier photography fair, Jans Bock-Schroeder exhibited 33 conceptual works from the series Bock-Schroeder by Bock-Schroeder, presented by Parisian photo dealer and expert Serge Plantureux (Galerie Vivienne).

The series was created in Paris by re-photographing his father's vintage prints using the same Leica his father had used to make the originals, at historically significant Parisian locations. The act was simultaneously archival, conceptual and deeply personal: the re-examination of a visual legacy through the very instrument that created it.

This concept, the rigorous, respectful, intellectually engaged re-examination of photographic history, became the founding philosophy of Visual Independence.
